Our previous post shared a detailed checklist for the entire HVAC system as you prepare to reopen your office or business after an extended shutdown.

One of the key items on your checklist is to replace the HVAC Air filters throughout your system to ensure it’s safe, clean, and not harboring bacteria accumulated during the extended coronavirus lockdown. So I created another checklist of what you need to change these filters throughout your HVAC system.

1. PPE

The first is the PPE you must wear to complete the task. At least the following PPE should be worn when handling used air filters:

2. Cross-contamination

The nature and operation of the system must be considered, as there is a risk of cross-contamination if mishandled (contaminating other filters in the system).

  • Positive or negative pressure in the room due to other ventilation systems could move contaminated air into the work area or move contaminated air into another unfiltered room. If so, isolate other ventilation systems.
  • Do not allow air to flow through your system without a filter installed.

3. Handling disposable filters

When removing a contaminated filter, procedures must also be followed for its handling and subsequent safe disposal. Also, he should wash his hands for 20 seconds with hot soapy water before and after completing this task.

  • Hold the used filter by the frame.
  • Avoid disturbing the particles on the filter media. Use the bag filter immediately after removing the bag and tying it, then remove the bag from that area.
  • If possible, leave the bagged filter in a safe place as close to the equipment as possible for 72 hours before removing it from the site.
  • Dispose of used filters at an approved, certified disposal center.
  • Do not handle the new filter with the gloves used to remove the used filter.

4. Handling washable filters

The process for washable filters is slightly different.

  • Hold the used filter by the frame.
  • Avoid disturbing the particles on the filter media.
  • Use the bag filter as soon as you remove it, and tie the bag before removing it from the area.
  • Wash the filter with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds. Allow the filter to dry before replacing it.

5. Personal hygiene

Personal hygiene is essential throughout the process.

  • Wash your hands regularly throughout the day, following government guidelines.
  • Wash your hands and change disposable gloves after each break.
  • Please wash your hands before leaving the site, following government guidelines. Pack all used PPE and dispose of it similarly to used filters.
